Typing race game

Four lanes, one passage, no lobby wait. Your keycap only moves on correct keystrokes, so the fastest clean typist crosses first.

How a typing race is scored

Everyone types the same passage. Your position on the track is simply the share of the text you have typed correctly, and your speed is net words per minute: correct characters divided by five, divided by minutes elapsed. The placement is decided by who reaches the flag first, not by who had the highest peak.

That makes accuracy the hidden accelerator. A typo costs the keystroke, the backspace and the retype, and while you fix it the bots keep moving.

Race your friends

Finish a race and tap Challenge a friend. The link carries your speed and the passage; your friend races your ghost in real time. Swap links back and forth for a best-of-five, or gather everyone around one keyboard in a typing tournament bracket.

Race tips

  • Read one word ahead. Your eyes should lead your fingers.
  • Don't chase the leader's keycap with panic bursts; steady rhythm finishes first.
  • Fix errors immediately; you can't run more than eight characters past one.
  • Capitals and punctuation are where races are won and lost. Practise shift with the opposite hand.

Questions players ask

What is a typing race?

A typing race is a game where several players type the same passage at once and progress along a track as they type correctly. The first to finish the passage wins, so speed and accuracy both count.

Is a typing race a good way to practice?

Yes, for most people. Racing adds just enough pressure to push your pace, and because only correct characters move you forward it rewards clean typing. Mix races with untimed accuracy practice if your error rate climbs.

Can I race typing with friends online?

Yes. Finish a race and send the challenge link; your friend races your ghost at your exact speed on the same passage. For a group in one room, use the Tournament bracket.

Is this a free TypeRacer alternative?

Yes. You get the same core loop, a shared passage and cars moving with your typing, with no account and no waiting for a lobby to fill. Rivals are tier-matched bots, and you can race real friends through ghost challenge links.

How do ghost challenges work?

When you finish, "Challenge a friend" creates a link that stores the passage number, your WPM and your racer name. Whoever opens it races a ghost that types at exactly your speed on the same text. Nothing is stored on a server.

Why can't I keep typing after a mistake?

Like most racing games, TypeWars lets you run only a few characters past an error before you must fix it. Your car only moves on correctly typed text, which keeps race results honest.

What does "Matched to me" mean?

It uses the average of your last ten saved rounds to pick a tier. New players start at Bronze. You can also pick any tier by hand, from Bronze (bots around 28 WPM) to Legend (around 110 WPM).

Can I race on my own text?

Open "Race on any topic", type a subject and TypeWars writes a fresh 45–65 word passage about it with AI. Custom passages can't be shared as ghost links because they are not stored anywhere.
